This thesis adopts two Chinese language romantic comedies 《杜拉拉升职记》 Go Lala Go! (2010) and 《得闲炒饭》All About Love (2010) as cases to analyze the gaze theory. These two films are directed by female filmmakers Xu Jinglei (徐静蕾) and Ann Hui (许鞍华) respectively and they provide a comparison analysis between hetero normative and lesbian about the gaze theory. The thesis also explores the debates about gaze theory base on Laura Mulvey’s theory of male gaze. According to Mulvey, male gaze carries power and female characters’ function is displaying for male gaze as erotic objects. However, the analysis demonstrates that all gaze carries power and female characters begin to consider male characters as erotic objects. Furthermore, male gaze got challenged for female gaze is rising up and the lesbian gaze may create a narrative space to subvert the male gaze.
