Title

The wave of Chinese immigrants to Europe : causes, consequences and prospects

English Abstract

The wave of Chinese immigrants to European countries has been a heated issue since European Debt Crisis. In order to recover the economy, a bunch of EU countries launched new immigration policies to attract Chinese investors by means of purchasing real estates or bonds. The dissertation emphasizes the phenomena and causes of the wave of Chinese immigrants to Europe, the background of issuing property-for-residency policy in European countries and the impact on China-EU relations after new immigration implemented. In particular, the European Debt Crisis and labor shortage stimulated the EU countries to loosen immigration policies toward Chinese while traditional immigration countries tightened the threshold.Besides, the internal causes--the wealthy expansion, environmental pollution, education and tourism demands all have made Europe become a popular destination for Chinese immigrants. Documentary analysis, data collection and case study methods are adopted in this thesis here whilst transnationalism and globalism are applied to analyze the research questions. Greece and Portugal are acted as case studies to finally sum up conclusions for the research questions that new immigration policies of European countries would promote China-EU interchange activities, enhance the bilateral relations of China-EU to be closer, and strengthen bilateral dependency no matter in politics, economy, culture or diplomacy.
