Title

Analysis of creating a new type of great power relations between China and the European Union

English Abstract

The concept of creating “new type” of “great power” or “major power” relations was first proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, which was at the informal Sunny-lands Summit with U.S. in June 2013. U.S. President Obama agreed that the two countries would seek both to develop the principles of this “new type” of relations and to operationalise those principles in concrete and practical cooperation of mutual benefit to both nations. China is also aims to seek for an opportunities to create a new type of major power relations with the European Union. On 25th December, 2014, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered an address titled 2014 in Review: A Successful Year for China's Diplomacy, in this address, the relationship between China and the European Union had listed in the part of the relations between “major countries”, which is just after the U.S. and Russia, the growing position is unprecedented compared with the previous address or any other document by China. China-EU relations have become as the “focus” by the fifth generation of Chinese leaders, for this phenomenon is unprecedented compared with the previous leaders of the Chinese government. In recent years, China- EU relations of cooperation is more closely. On April, 2014, China has released out the second Policy Document to the European Union: Deepen the China-EU Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Mutual Benefit and Win-win Cooperation. China and the European Union with frequent exchanges of leadership between the two sides and the bilateral relationship is really warming up and making progress in these years. Therefore, how to define the new type of great power relations within the relationship between China and the European Union? Is there any possibilities to seek for creating the new type of great power relations with the European Union? What are the potential 6 barriers to achieving the ‘new type’ of relations and what are the approaches for creating the new type of great power relations with the European Union? This thesis will attempt to use levels-of-analysis intends to make a comprehensive and elaborate analysis in the context of China-EU relations.
