The recovery journey of schizophrenia is a long-term process. After being discharged from hospital, the majority of individuals in recovery from schizophrenia go back to their families. The aim of this qualitative study was to understand how individuals in recovery from schizophrenia narrate their family life stories after returning home. Five participants were interviewed. The Collage Life Story Elicitation Technique (CLET) was used for depicting life stories in a collage and telling the stories of the collage. The findings revealed three themes in the family life stories of the participants, namely misunderstanding and emotional distance, inferior self-image to loneliness, mutuality vs. rigid boundary. This study provided us with an in-depth understanding of the needs, challenges, feelings, thoughts and viewpoints of individuals in recovery from schizophrenia, and areas in which professionals should assist the individual and the family members to adjust and improve the quality of family life.
