Title

胡適詞學研究 = A study on Hu Shih's Ci poetry

English Abstract

Hu Shih is one of the most symbolic figures in the Minguo period. He has significant achievements in various fields such as literature, philosophy, history, textual criticism, pedagogy, ethics and redology. He bears the principle of “boldly making hypotheses and carefully seeking proofs” both in his life and his scholarship. He has written numerous literary works in his lifetime, and has been a pioneer in the field of Ci poetry in the 20th century with his Selection of Ci poetry and Experiments in Poetry. This thesis, A Study on Hu Shih’s Ci Poetry, is divided into two parts. The first part will present one of the research objectives, with a narrative of (i) Hu Shih’s biography; and (ii) analysis on his writing orientation from his experience in studying Ci poetry. The second part will present the other research objective. Through the Discussion and Analysis section, this thesis will summarize the prior reviews on Hu Shih’s Ci poetry and commentaries on “Hu Shih’s form” to find out how he has sought a new beginning for vernacular poetry in the 20th century.
