This paper aims to explore how Jesuits in the courts of Ming and Qing China pursued imperial toleration, what strategies they took, in what degree they obtained imperial toleration and the greatest achievement they had ever made-the Edict of Toleration in 1692. The introduction presents the research subject, the approach, the structure, methods, materials, concepts and the value of the study. The 1st chapter studies the factors that contributed to the formation of the strategy of pursuing imperial toleration and Jesuits in Court. The following chapters do a research on how Jesuits pursued toleration in imperial courts of Ming and Qing dynasties (1601-1723), their roles in the mission, and the toleration granted by emperors and governments. The 6th chapter analyzes the promulgation, textual meaning and the influence of the Edict of Toleration which is the only edict Court Jesuits had obtained from Imperial China. The conclusion first presents the fading role played by Court Jesuits and the ending of the imperial toleration, and then is the reflection on the strategy of court Jesuits. It is concluded that, the strategy of pursuing imperial toleration did have flaws, and Chinese rulers didn't grant them the complete freedom they were desired and neither this was possible. Even though, from the angle of the confrontation between Imperial China and Europe, this strategy and the toleration conceded by the emperors symbolize a peaceful and ideal way of inter-cultural contact.

本文探討萬曆至康熙時宫廷耶稣會士為尋求皇帝寬容天主教而採取的策略方法和實現的程度。前言介紹了研究問题、思路、結框架、方法理論、材料、概念，以及意義與價值。第一章分析入華耶稣會士尋求皇帝容教的背景與原因，後四章分析萬曆至康熙時期，他們在宫廷為尋求寶容天主教採取的策略與活動，在整個傅教團的作用，以及朝廷的寬容。第六章分析1692 年明清朝廷頒饰的唯一一道容教詔令，從頒布過程、文本分析、影響與意義方面展開。結論闡釋和分析宫廷教士“求容”作用的式微和喪失，朝廷“容教”的終結，並從歷史角度衡量這一策略。通過研究可以看出，耶穌會“求容”策略有一定的缺陷，明清統治者沒有，也不可能給予他們追求的全面“容教”。即使如此，西洋教士的“求容”和明清朝廷的“寬容”不失為當時中歐交流互動的理想方式。
