Title

Female politicians and global peace : it is femininity that matters

English Abstract

The connection between women and peace-- whether women love peace more than men and whether female politicians will make the world more peaceful than male politicians--has been heatedly debated between male scholars and female scholars, and even among feminist scholars. The discussion is focused on the surface-whether women love peace in nature. However, in people's impression, in the real political practice, female politicians do not always prefer peaceful foreign policies, and sometimes they are considered even more combative than male politicians, and especially the most well- known female politicians are often "iron ladies". On the other side, people still believe that women love peace more than men because of their experience of taking care of children and families, or of the "feminine" nature. In this thesis, I still approve the point that female politicians will make the world more peaceful; Not naturally, but because of the "femininity" they have acquired. The logic process is: firstly, female politicians love peace than male politicians; secondly, the reason of that is their constructed femininity- related characteristic; thirdly, female politicians in a feminine society love peace more than those in a masculine society. By the quantitative statics and case studies, we will be surprised to find that even those female politicians who are labeled so masculine are actually peace lovers, especially when we define "peace" in a wider horizon, but not out of realists' perspective. We can imagine in a world where there was no clear line between "masculinity" and "Femininity" by people's genders, even males would be peace-lovers.
