Title

The impacts of international organizations on Macau

English Abstract

Abstract International relations refer to the ongoing events and global issues that are happening in the world. Theories of international organizations describe, explain and predict various aspects of international relations. International organizations (IOs) refer to any institutions with formal procedures and formal membership for three or more countries. In the contemporary international system in global politics, IOs play key roles in international bargaining, serving as arenas for negotiating and for developing coalitions. IOs constitute a very important part to regime formation, as they facilitate the formation of trans-governmental and transnational networks composed of both sub-national and non-governmental actors where major changes in the international distribution of power are negotiated. Since the effects of institutions are governed by the norms that affect state behavior through the domestic politics, international rules and norms can enter domestic policy process by the actions and interests of state and/or societal actors, and the incorporation of international rules and norms into domestic laws. Therefore, an international norm becomes salient when the relevant actor legitimates a particular behavior or action. Take Macau as a case of study, this study seeks to investigate the level of domestic salience of international norms, and how the domestic salience of an international norm can penetrate into the domestic structure, which in turn led to a change of attitude and behavior towards international organizations and its norms, especially on how international norms affect domestic institutional process through the actions of domestic actors.
