Media representation of foreign domestic workers in Macau and Hong Kong : a longitudinal analysis of reports in Macau Daily and Apple Daily in 2003-2012

English Abstract

This study aims to develop an understanding of the patterns of representation and appearances of foreign domestic workers in the Hong Kong and Macau’s mainstream newspapers. It is important to examine the precise mode of media representation of “the other”. Longitudinal and cross-area content analysis and framing analysis conducted as for media coverage of foreign domestic workers on Macau Daily and Apple Daily from the year 2003 to 2012, and the news framework analysis model helped to interpret the images of foreign domestic workers. Results showed the presented negative images of foreign domestic workers related to the issue-attention in newspapers and the hot topics over time. Theoretical and social implications of the descriptive and explanatory findings are discussed.
