Abstract of thesis entitled“The Stock Market Development and Economic Growth in China”, submitted by Wang Meng (M-B1-5638-0) for the degree of master of Social Science in Economics at the University of Macau. This paper investigates how the stock market may affect economic growth in China through time-series analysis. To investigate the nexus of finance and growth in greater China, we used the quarterly data from 1994 to 2010, aiming to study the impact of stock market development on economic growth in mainland China using the Johansen Cointegration and Granger Causality tests. This thesis uses two indices to measure the trend of Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong stock markets. Furthermore, it constructs some new indices that can measure the size and liquidity of a stock market. We find that there exists a comprehensive relationship between GDP per capita of China and the stock market indices in China and Hong Kong. Specifically, we find that GDP can significantly cause stock market development, but the fluctuation of the stock market has no direct relationship with the variation of GDP.
