論白先勇小說的古典性與現代性 = A study of the classicality and modernity of Bai Xianyong's fictions

English Abstract

As “a prodigy of the short story writer in contemporary China”, Bai Xianyong ‘s fictions are deeply loved by readers because of its profound contents and consummate artistic techniques. Western Modernism have exerted influence on Bai Xianyong’s early works. After he went to the USA, Bai Xianyong learned west literary theory systematically and reviewed Chinese classical culture. Then he combined classical literature and modernism perfectly, forming the unique artistic characteristics and cultural flavor in his fictions. This paper analyses the classicality and modernity of his fictions in the level of subject contents and artistic forms on the basis of the analysis of material contents (mainly fictions) and states how two different kinds of literature temperament merge , thus forming the general characteristics that classicality is the base and modernity is the supplement in his fictions. The first chapter expatiates the classical connotations and classical techniques in his fictions. In the aspect of connotation, Bai Xianyong’s fictions show the respect to historical vicissitudes and life's vagaries particularly, and are somewhat infiltrated by Buddhism. In the aspect of techniques, his novel inherit from Chinese classical literature and develop it, including his fond of image, paying attention to form vividly and pure and clear statements. The second chapter analyses the modern connotations and modern techniques in his fictions. In the aspect of connotation, his novels were apparently influenced by existentialism literature and Christ feelings. In the aspect of techniques, the author makes extensive use of stream-of-consciousness theory, dramatic narrative model and symbolic art. The third chapter analyses and summarizes the characteristic of the classicality and modernity in Bai Xianyong’s fictions that classicality is the base and modernity is the supplement. In the last part of the paper, history writing in his fictions is used as an example, to explain the characteristics simply.

Chinese Abstract

作為“當代中國短篇小說家中的奇才”,白先勇的小說以其豐富深刻的內容, 圓熟自然的藝術技巧受到讀者的喜愛。白先勇早期創作深受西方現代主義影響, 赴美後,他在系統學習研究西方文學理論的基礎上,重新審視中國古典文化,成 功地將古典與現代完美融匯,形成了其小說中獨特的藝術特質和文化韻味。 本文在對白先勇具體小說文本(以短篇小說為主)進行研究分析的基礎上, 從主題內容和表現形式兩個層面分析其小說的古典性與現代性,並闡述這兩種截 然不同的文學氣質是如何在他的小說中進行融匯,從而構成了“古典本色,現代 補充”的總體特徵。 第一章闡述了白先勇小說的“古典內蘊”與“古典技法”。在“內蘊”方面, 白先勇小說尤其表現出了對“歷史滄桑、人生無常”的推崇,以及佛教因素在其 小說中也有所滲透。在“技法”方面,白先勇的小說對中國古典文學技法有著自 覺地承繼與發展,其中包括對意象的鍾情,“以形傳神”的人物描寫技法以及純 粹精緻的漢語書寫等。 第二章分析了白先勇小說的“現代內蘊”與“現代技法”。在“內蘊”方面, 白先勇小說受到存在主義文學的明顯影響以及基督情懷的精神觀照。在“技法” 方面,意識流手法、戲劇化敘述、象徵藝術在其小說中都得到了充分運用。 第三章分析總結了白先勇小說中“古典性”與“現代性”的融匯特徵是 “古典”本色,“現代”補充,並以其小說的歷史書寫為例, 對這一特徵進行 了簡要闡釋。
