Title

Translation of worldplay in Amy Tan's the Joy Luck Club

English Abstract

Wordplay is a special phenomenon of language. Translation of wordplay, which has always been a great challenge for translators, is still an under-investigated issue in translation studies. In the case of Chinese American literature The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, the presence of wordplay does not simply involve the English and the Chinese languages, but also the American culture and the Chinese culture. The translation of wordplay may become more difficult when it comes to the writings of cross-cultural encounter and conflicts. In this thesis, the author studies how the wordplays in The Joy Luck Club have been translated by various translators. The data are collected from The Joy Luck Club (1989) and its three Chinese versions. The analysis shows that the translators often render the original text wordplays into Non-wordplays, sometimes combined with Editorial Techniques. The thesis attempts to give suggestions on how to effectively translate wordplays in between English and Chinese.
