"聊齋誌異" 中的反面人物形象 = Negative characters in the Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio

English Abstract

This thesis applies a synthetic method of literary criticism, aesthetical analysis, historical investigation, and philosophical and religious inquiry to conduct a comprehensive study on the negative characters in the Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio. The thesis first theorizes Pu Songling’s approach of “revealing beauty through ugliness,” by which he demonstrated the aesthetical and social values of negative characters. The author of the thesis disagrees with the popular scholastic view that the fiction’s central theme is “anti-feudal society,” and indicates that traditional Chinese society of Qin-Han to Qing dynasty was not feudal society. Pu Songling’s target of criticism was the bureaucratic system of imperial autocracy. The thesis then presents a list of all the negative characters in the fiction, classifies them into three major types of corrupted officials, greedy and lust Buddhist monks and Daoist priests, and brutal human or supernatural characters, and analyzes these types in detail. About Pu Songling’s thought and faith, previous scholarship often focused on the arguments that he was theist or atheist. The author of this thesis thinks this kind of arguments is not important, but instead investigates how Confucian thought, Buddhist teaching, and Daoist faith influenced Pu Songling’s creation of the negative characters, and also pays special attention to the influence of popular cults and beliefs. Through these investigations, the thesis discusses in depth the ideological and religious background of Pu Songling’s purpose on “repressing the evil and elevating the good” through the images of negative characters.

Chinese Abstract

本論文綜合運用文學、美學、歷史學、哲學、宗教學等研究方法對《聊齋誌 異》中的反面人物進行全面的研究探討。文中先從理論上說明蒲松齡通過“以醜顯 美”而體現反面人物的審美價值和社會價值。筆者不同意學界以“反封建社會”概括 《聊齋誌異》的主題思想,指出中國自秦漢至清代的傳統社會不是封建社會;蒲 松齡借用幽冥幻域、談狐說鬼之手法所批判的應是皇權專制下的官僚體制。本論 文進而全面地對小說中的反面人物進行列表歸納,劃分為離經叛道的貪官、貪淫 的僧道及欺淩弱小的鬼怪人物三類主要人物,並細緻分析這三類人物形象的特 性。關於蒲松齡的思想信仰,過往的學者們往往糾纏於有神論和無神論的爭辯。 本論文認為這種爭辯意義不大,並具體地探討儒家思想、佛教教義、道教信仰對 蒲松齡塑造反面人物形象的影響,並特別強調民俗宗教信仰的重要作用,從而較 深入地說明他通過反面人物而“抑惡揚善”的思想信仰淵源。 關鍵詞:聊齋志異,蒲松齡,反面人物,皇權專制,民俗信仰
