Title

Shall we dance? : identity, sensation and futures in Macao's ballet community

English Abstract

In Macao, ballet is an elite culture that seldom people really talk and think about. Ballet is still new and unfamiliar to Macao residents and few people really spend time to study it or its culture. As a result, there are only a small number of studies of the Macao ballet culture over the last three decades. Since I am one of the members in this ballet group, I hope I can make use of my unique position to study this ballet world with which I am always in touch. For this my masters thesis, started out with the intent to make an ethnographic film to analyze the culture and environment of the Macao ballet community. I have sought to use my position as both a ballet teacher and a student of ballet to help others understand the identity, sensation and futures that make up the Macao ballet.
