According to Schechner, "Performances mark identities, bend and remake time, adorn and reshape the body, tell stories, and allow people to play with behavior that is 'twice-behaved,' not-for-the-first-time, rehearsed, cooked, prepared" (1998, 361). With the changes of administrative powers, a Creole community strives to maintain its identity by performing rituals, presenting their communal norms as well as expressing their cultural identity via various approaches. In 1999, Macau - former Portuguese enclave - was returned to the People's Republic of China. This significant event did not only mark the revolutionary change of political and judicial powers, but also a turning point of the local hybrid group - the Macanese, who referenced themselves to the Portuguese counterparts (the colonizers) and yet set their roots in this Land (Macau), asserting their position in this place by naming themselves as Filhos da Terra (Sons of the Land). The purpose of the study is to analyze the changes of identity reinforcements and cultural performances of the Macanese community in the postcolonial era; and to document a cultural group that is increasingly dispersed and rapidly disappearing. The various approaches employed by the researcher are discourse analysis, participant observation and personal interviews. Newsletters, Creole cuisine, theatrical performances, the use of cyberspace as well as the Encontro (worldwide Macanese gathering event) will be the subject of analysis. A substantial amount of information has also been obtained through interviews with members of this community. In order to fully understand the foundation for the hybrid identity of the Macanese, one must first understand the historical background and the transformation of the political foundation of Macau, as well as the formation of this hybrid community in the colonial era.
