Title

The symbolic power in the emblem of the Games of the 2008 Olympiad

English Abstract

Abstract My project is a study about symbolic communication and symbolic power. It exams a case study-the Emblem of The Games of the 2008 Olympiad-to demonstrate how the symbolic power are presented in different interpretations. Specially, the study proposed four communicative links: the creation of the symbolic form of Beijing Olympic Emblem, the official interpretation, the cultural uses of the Emblem in commercial market and in mass media, the individual interpretation of it. For explaining the characteristics of symbolic power, from two correspondent perspectives, I analyzed the Chinese government and BOCOG's investment in making the symbolic power of the Olympic emblem; the construction of cultural meanings in the official interpretation associated with the commercialization and popularization process, via some interviews with ordinary people in Beijing with their personal uses of the symbolic power. This study aims to provide a clear comprehension about the theoretical operation significance of the symbolic power. This approach is not only for knowing of the emblem itself, what's more important is for analyzing some social reality behind it when China as society in transition. The issues discussed in my study include: nationalism, globalization and consumerism. Meanwhile, this study addresses the audience's effect in cultural communication.
