Title

A cohesive crack model to simulate masonry structure and predict of crack pattern using extended finite element method (XFEM)

English Abstract

Masonry is considered a heterogeneous anisotropic material. It is mainly divided to two type of modelling ways of masonry to simulate its material property - micro and macro. The advantage of micro modelling is accuracy but the way of modelling are complex and complicated. In order to simplify and reduce the computational cost, macro modelling is normally used for simulating large scale masonry structures, using average stresses and strains to represent its heterogeneous anisotropic property. However, it is indirectly to tracking damaged zone, crack or failure mechanism. For example, a damage plasticity material model - concrete damage plasticity is used for simulating concrete-like brittle material. It is capable for capture the responses of masonry structure, passing through observing the zone of maximum tensile plastic strain to track the crack path. In recent decades, extended finite element method (XFEM) is well known as used to modelling discontinuity in finite element problems. It allows to simulate arbitrary crack growth and without re-meshing through improving and enhancing the approximation displacement function. In this research, a macro-model approach utilizing a combination of elastic-based constitutive models and cohesive crack model through extended finite element method (XFEM) is proposed. Using XFEM to simulate crack propagation within masonry structures with a pre-existing flaw. The analysis is conducted using standard finite element software following a Newton Raphson algorithm without employing user-defined subroutines. It found that XFEM techqnique are directly and clearly to determine the crack pattern. Through compare crack pattern result between XFEM technique and experiment by angle of crack, it was also found that XFEM technique still be able to predict the crack pattern.
