Description
Commodore John Barry (1745-1803) was the son of a poor tenant farmer, and born in a modest Irish thatched cottage at Ballysampson on Our Lady's Island, which is part of Tacumshin Parish in County Wexford, and the southeasternmost part of Ireland. In the space of 58 years, the son of the poor Irish farmer rose from a humble cabin boy to senior commander of the entire United States fleet. After the War for Independence and the dissolution of the Continental Navy, John Barry reentered the maritime trade, and between the years 1787-89, helped to open commerce with China and the Orient while captaining the merchant ship, Asia.
The Barry-Hayes Papers include the business, political and personal papers of John Barry, Captain of the United States Navy, and of his family, especially his nephew Patrick Hayes and grand-nephew, Patrick Barry Hayes, as well as the business ventures of the Hayes, Keen and Somers families, and their personal lives.
