On page 158 : "The Portuguese had now firmly established their position at macao, and they were anxious still further to consolidate it by the erection of a fort. Accordingly, on the 10th November 1610, the King, writing on this subject, cautioned the Viceroy to proceed in a peaceable manner, and at the same time to make presents to the Mandarins, and explain that the fort would result in great benefit to them."
