Abstract
Abstract : In the 19th century several British and North-American travellers like Joseph Fry andCommodore Matthew Perry published travel narratives on their voyages to the Far East and described theirstays in Macao. While visiting the city, Anglophone authors describe one of it most famous literary andhistorical monuments, the Camões Cave or Grotto, associated with the Portuguese bard since the eighteenthcentury. In this paper I analyse the representations of the monument as a symbolical tourist attraction and aPortuguese literary monument in Asia in Anglophone Literatures throughout the nineteenth century, namely in the travel narratives of Joseph Fry and Matthew Perry. Those travel accounts and novels create a web of intricate intertexts that complement and echo each other regarding the description of the ‘cave’, while Camões becomes a symbol of the Portuguese presence and of Anglo-Portuguese relations in the Far East.
