Abstract
Abstract : With the furthering of globalization and Americanization, an increasing number of American TV programs have entered the Chinese market and begun to inform, entertain, and influence Chinese viewers, especially university students. Thus we are confronted with an urgent question: how should we consume these imported cultural products? In other words, how should we watch these programs and read these televisual representations with enjoyment but also critically? This paper, informed by and drawing upon theories in cultural studies such as feminism, postmodernism and post-colonialism, attempts an original and critical exploration of the representations of clored women in the long-running American sitcom(situation comedy) Friends (1994-2005). The study finds that in general colored people have been under-represented in this white sitcom, the colored women in it have been ambiguously and ambivalently depicted. Underlying this depiction of colored women is revealed a strategy of reforming the stereotypes, fetishizing the othre, and naturalizing white normalcy, which in effect further works to legitimatize, sustain and perpetuate the domination of white supermacist patriarchal capitalist ideology.
