Abstract
Abstract : The success of a country's tourism industry is often measured by tourist arrivals and gross tourism income. However, many hidden costs to tourism arise, which can have unfavorable economic and social effects on the destination country. Based on relevant economic statistics across various tourism-driven small economies, and under the macroeconomic framework, this paper outlines the possible economic impacts and distribution effects od the tourism sector on destination countries, the negative aspects of which are often ignored. It aims to inspire policy makers to focus more on the real instead of pure accounting profitability of the tourism industry, and to provide some modest proposals which may help to formulate a more comprehensive and economically efficient set of tourism strategies.
