Abstract
Abstract : This paper explores the effects of state ownership and size on profitability of Chinese commercial banks. Using an unbalanced bank-level panel data set consisting of 87 Chinese major commercial banks over 1998-2011 and regressed with fixed effect models, we find that state ownership does not have an economically significant effect on profitability of these commercial banks over the period of interest, while bank size has a statistically and economically significant and positive effect on profitability. This explains why all most all Chinese commercial banks are going all out to grow larger, and why they are reluctant to serve small and medium-sized enterprises. Paragraph Headings: 1.
