Abstract
Abstract : This paper explorers the extent to which there is inequality by sex in employment in Macau, and whether this has changes over time. It presents five consecutive years’ worth of survey data on men and women in employment in Macau, by types and levels of seniority in employment, and by earnings for employed men and women in Macau. The analysis presents a clear prima facie case of considerable inequality by sex in employment in Macau. The paper cautions against the assumption that the figures present an unequivocal picture. The argument is advanced that important exogenous and endogenous variable are excluded from the analysis and that, were these to be factored into the surveys and controlled, then some of the observed differences between men and women in Macau’s employment found might be reduced and causality might be discovered. That this cannot be done with the aggregated survey data available suggests an important limitation in the Endeavour to determine too easily causes from observations of effects.
