- Abstract
- Abstract : The study was inspired by an interesting phenomenon observed in the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST hereafter) that Chinese mainland students generally have higher achievement than local Macau students in the English classroom. In order to discover the possible explanation to the above phenomenon, this study compares learning styles of the students from Mainland China and Macau in their first year of university study in MUST and explores if there is a statistically significant relationship between learning styles and student learning achievement, at the same time attempts to catch a glimpse of the different sociocultural experience affecting the learning style differences. A translated version of MBTI and Vermunt's Inventory of Learning Styles (1994) questionnaire is delivered to 112 students from six different majors in MUST, including 60 Macau students and 52 Chinese mainland students. The results are analyzed in detail and factors affecting the differences are discussed. Instead of stereotyping the students of either origin, this study will hopefully help our faculty members to gain insight and adjust teaching methods accordingly to enhance English teaching and learning outcome.
