- Abstract
- Objective: To investigate the endplate force of adjacent segments after artificial disc replacement. Methods: The stress effects of the superior segmental cartilaginous endplates were performed respectively with artificial disc replacement, discectomy, and spinal fusion on the L4/5-level lumbar disc contrasted against those of normal lumbar disc as internal controls. Results: Our results mostly showed that there were significant capabilities of the anti-stress resistance on the artificial disc replacement against those of discetomy and spinal fusion under a variety of spinal motions. The multifactor variance analysis demonstrated that there were significant differences (P<0.05) statistically in the analysis. Conclusion: Our studies demonstrated that the resistance capability of lumbar disc replacement was more excellent than those preformed with conservative discectomy and spinal arthrodesis, but shown was worse than those of the normal disc group. In short, artificial disc replacement was designed to preserve spinal physical motion at the intervertebral segment and subsequently reduce adjacent segment degeneration. Paragraph Headings: 1.
