- Abstract
- Objective: This study identified characteristics of patients with co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders (SUD) (except disorders related to alcohol, nicotine or sedatives) that were admitted to the psychiatric ward (PW) of Centro Hospitalar Conde de São Januário, Macao during a one-year period. Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed on all patients with co-occuring psychiatric and SUD hospitalized at the psychiatric ward in 2006. Demographic and clinical variables were examined. Results: The 18 individuals (13 men, 5 women) with co-occurring psychiatric and SUD and 25 in-patient episodes over the study period, corresponding to 5.3% of all admissions. The leading psychiatric diagnosis for these individuals was psychotiv disorder due to use of substances. In 13 in-patient episodes, the individuals presented cough mixture dependence. The median length of each stay at the ward was 20.2 days for men and 9.5 days for women. In 24 in-patient episodes individuals showed clinical improvement at discharge. Only one individual was compulsory admitted. Conclusions: These findings suggest that routine use of diagnostic assessment for SUD need to be intensified in patients admitted to the PW, and treatment strategies for patients with co-occurring psychiatric and SUD need to be improved.
