- Abstract
- Abstract : We report a case of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome in a 51-year-old alcoholic man admitted to hospital because of respiratiory tract infection, confusion, and gait ataxia. On the 6th week of admission, the syndrome was suspected and thiamine i.v. in high dose was administered. Over the following weeks, with further treatments that included memantine, there was a progressive and substantial improvement of ataxia and amnesia. We discuss the importance of recognizing Wernicke's encephalopathy and administering thiamine. Paragraph Headings: 1. Introduction 2. Case 3. Discussion
