Abstract
Abstract : Nireic oxide (NO), a simple free radical gas, elicits a surprisingly wide range of physiological and pathp[hsiological effects through its interaction with guanylate cyclase to evoke these effects. Recent studies suggest that NO has both pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic action. The integral role of apoptosis and NO related to cardivascular diseases has become more apparent. On the other hand, pharmacological compounds that release NO have been developed and found to have potential therapeutic value. Some commonly used cardiovascular agents indeed exert their beficial action, in part by modulating NO pathway. This review focuses on the role of endogenous NO in the pathophysiological mechanisms for several cardiovascular disorders, the mechanisms of action of exgenous NOdonors, drugs modulating NO bioactivity, nitric oxide synthase (NOS)inhibitors and their potential benefit in treatment of cardiovascular disease.
