Abstract
Objective : To determine the prevalence of overweight, to investigate the factors related to overweight, such as socioeconomic status, family history, diet intake, preference of food and physical activity among grade one student in Fai Chi Kei of Macao. Design : A cross-sectional survey of 1013 children aged 6-8 years of age from eight primary schools between September 1997 to June 1998 in Fai Chi Kei. Children overweight was defined as weight greater than 120% median weight for height for sex. Data were gathered through anthropometric and questionnaire. The data were analyzed by computer using simple descriptive, chi square and logistic regression methods. Results : Prevalence of obesity in grade one children in Fai Chi Kei was 3.9%, girl children had a higher prevalence of overweight than boys. Overweight was increasing according to the increase of age. After adjusted for age and sex, the risk factors were found: family history of obesity, drinking sweet beverage more than 7 times per week, taking meal more than 4 times a day and taking vegetable less than two times per day. Conclusion : the prevalence of wverweight was low compared to Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. In order to keep such good situation, education need to be implemented for focus at the risk factors of overweight, such as physical activity and dietary intake. Paragraph Headings: 1.
