Abstract
Objective: To determine the prevalence of HBsAg and to assess the behavior and knowledge of women about hepatitis B. Methods: A cross-sectional study was designed. 276 pregnant women from eight health centers in January 1999 were chosen randomly. Data was gathered through self-administered questionnaire and recorded blood result of HBsAg. The data were analyzed using simple descriptive. Results: Prevalence of HBsAg among pregnant women in health centers in 1999 was 10.1%. Few participants had accepted three doses of hepatitis B vaccine. Some pregnant women shared the shavers and had extra-marital sex with others. The knowledge of women about hepatitis B needed to improve. Conclusion: The HbsAg Bbpositive pregnant women in Macao slightly declined in the past decade. The present regionwide vaccination program against hepatitis B virus prenatal transmission should be kept going and additional education of health care providers is needed with regard to the knowledge of all pregnant women for hepatitis B virus.
