- Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze our experience in surgical treatment for hydatidosis in the chest and discuss the diagnosis and operation of this disease. Method: From May 1957 to December 2002, 1230 patients with thoracic hydatidosis were treated in our clinic and clinical data, diagnosis and surgical technique were studied retrospectively. Result: A total of 1289 operations had been performed for these patients. Cystectomy was underwent in 79.7% of all patients in this group, lung resection and pericardiostomy in 11.6%, simple drainage in 4.9%, operation of thoracic cavity in 2.1%, operation of mediastinum, chest wall and diaphragm in 1.71%. 1255 patients were cured and 5 patients died with the mortality rate is 0.4% 41 reoccurred cases underwent another operation and reoccurrence rate is 3.3%. Conclusion: Operation is the first choice for treatment of this disease and cystotomy after needle aspiration and complete excision of the endocyst is the main technique. VATS (vedio-assisted thoracoscopic surgery) or cystectomy after liquid nitrogen freezing can also be used in some selected cases. Paragraph Headings: 1. Material and Methods 2. Result 3.
