- Abstract : Antibiotics are very commonly prescribed for infectious diseases. However, the irrational use of antibiotics leads to rapid emergence of drug-resistant microorganisms. It also increases the medical expenditure of our society. This article is to point out some important facts on antibiotics prescribing. For example, we need to consider the health status of the patient, routes & sites of infections, rdsistance patterns, and the characteristics of antibiotics such as pharmacokinetic parameters, adverse effects & contraindications. In addition, the total expenses on drugs of the Macao Government Hospital & primary health centers in 1999 & 2000 are listed for reference. Paragraph Headings： 1. The infection 2. The patient 3.
